History of the B-17G FortressIntroduced by Boeing in April 1938, the Sentimental Journey B- 17G Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber used in World War II. The prototype crashed and Boeing lost its contract with the US Army Air Corps (USAAC) but still impressed the USAAC enough that thirteen B- 17s were ordered. Initially, it was used for daylight precision strategic bombing campaign against German targets. 640,000 tons of bombs were dropped by the said aircraft on Germany. It was later used in raids against Japanese shipping and airfields, too. It was then developed into the Boeing 307 commercial transport aircraft.
Powered by four Wright R-1820- 97 Cyclone turbo supercharged radial engines, the Fortress B-17G Fortress had a maximum speed of 287 mph and a service ceiling of more than 35,000 ft. Priced at $238,329 each, it had a length of 22.66, height of 5.82m, and wingspan of 31.62m. It was armed with thirteen .50 M2 Browning machine guns, and up to 17,600 lbs of bombs. The Fortress B-17G retired in 1968.
